FAQs

I'm usually a coffee drinker, what kind of tea should I buy?

That depends on what kind of coffee you like to drink.  If you drink espresso with milk, such as a latte, flat white, mocha, or cortado, you should try our Black Pearl, which has rich cocoa notes and a natural sweetness, or Snow Blossom, for the creamy mouthfeel and texture.  For black coffee drinkers, Black Gold is a strong, malty tea with fruity notes that produces a very attractive, burnt sienna brew.

I don't have a teapot - what else can I use?

A french press is a great way to make tea! Just make sure to wash it thoroughly in hot water to remove any residual coffee first. Place the dry tea leaves in the french press and pour hot water over. Similar to making coffee, leave the handle up until it's time to serve the tea, then press down and pour as per usual.

Can I cold brew your tea?

Absolutely! To cold brew, use twice as much tea leaves per volume of water and steep in cold water for 8hrs or overnight. If you're looking for a quicker fix, try brewing hot tea twice as strong and adding ice. The ice cubes will melt and dilute the tea to the normal flavor, but feel free to experiment with what you like.

Why are different teas sold tubes and pouches?

Some tea is very loose and fluffy, while other teas are rolled and dense.  Because we sell our teas by weight, 50g (1.8oz) of a rolled oolong like our Crimson Oolong requires much less space than the same quantity of Moonlight White.  We want to be effective with our packaging and make sure the size matches the contents - thus the different packaging.  However, never fear, all our teas are sold in resealable, air tight containers.

Do you sell de-caffeinated tea?

At Athena Teas we focus on offering high quality, pure teas, to curious people.  The best teas are not available de-caffeinated because the decaffeination process requires the use of solvents that strip caffeine - and unfortunately a lot of flavor - out of the tea leaves.  We are looking at adding some roasted teas to our range that have minimal caffeine so keep an eye out!  If you want a cup of tea that is completely caffeine-free, we recommend choosing a herbal tea.

Help there's dust in my tea

Some of our teas come from tea varieties that have tiny hairs covering the buds.  For example, these downy buds are what give our Golden Monkey its rich color, and can be seen most beautifully on our Silver Needle pure-buds tea.  These fine hairs can sometimes break off during the steeping process, which is why they can appear floating on the surface of your tea.

How do I store my tea after opening?

All Athena Teas come in resealable, air tight packaging that is also light and moisture resistant.  All teas no matter where you bought them from do better stored in a cool, dark, dry place, away from any strong smells. We do not recommend storing tea in the fridge due to the condensation that is likely to collect in the bag once it is opened.

Do you offer wholesale?

Absolutely! If you are interested in stocking our teas in your café (supplier packaging) or gift store (retail packaging), please get in touch at hello@athenateas.com with details about your business and we will be able to provide a line sheet or hospitality supply T&Cs.
